Clemens Cup Regatta

A Few Words About the Clemens Cup Classic Regatta

The Clemens Cub Classic Regatta was named for the late Bill Clemens, an avid sailor, practical joker and truly colorful character who loved cruising.  It was only fitting that a race bearing his name would be unique as well.

Sometimes called a "cruiser's race," the regatta consists of two days of racing over one weekend.  In past years, racers would start Saturday morning and race across Lake Harris to Leesburg, then overnight on their vessels and race back the following morning.  The 2-day course can be as short as 8 miles and as long as 30, depending on the winds.  And, of course, free beer and soft drinks are supplied, as Bill would have wanted it. Currently the races are run out of and back to Hickory Point facility. The park rules do not allow alcohol, so keep the beer and brews on the boats!

Details

The CFYC invites all sailors to the Clemens Cup Cruiser Challenge to be sailed on Lake Harris in March. Watch for final date. Launch and retrieval will be at the ramps at Hickory Point. (It's a $2.00 fee to enter the park after dusk; have $1 dollar bills for the machine) Registration begins at 9:00am in the pavilion near the restrooms. Skipper's Meeting will be held at 11:00am, with the race beginning at 12:00. Classes of boats will be determined by the amount of boats participating, and Portsmouth ratings will be assigned.

Racers will follow a marked distance course across Lake Harris and back to Hickory Point for the finish on Saturday, and follow a shorter buoy course on Sunday. Your entry fee entitles you to free beer and soft drinks on Saturday after the race, (with dinners available), and continental breakfast on Sunday.

We will be raffling off hundreds of dollars worth of nautical prizes that Saturday night; your registration automatically enters you in the raffle.

Trophies are awarded for the first three places in each class, with the Clemens Cup going to the club with the most points amassed.

Points are based on finishing positions. Boats without Portsmouth ratings will be assigned one at registration.

Please help us by being good stewards of the park facility, and obey all Hickory Point regulations while you are in the park.
